Jorginho's penalty deep into first-half stoppage time gave Chelsea a hard-fought 1-0 win at Everton on the Premier League’s opening weekend.
Thomas Tuchel's side racked up 13 corners during the opening period but were unable to find a way through before Abdoulaye Doucoure clumsily fouled Ben Chilwell.
Jordan Pickford saved from Jorginho in the Euro 2020 final shoot-out, but the Italy midfielder sent the England goalkeeper the wrong way on this occasion.
The long period of additional time was necessary after Everton defender Ben Godfrey suffered what looked like a serious injury in a collision with Pickford and Kai Havertz in the 10th minute.
Frank Lampard’s side battled gamely and Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray offered a persistent threat on the break, but they were unable to find their way past a Chelsea backline reinforced by debutant Kalidou Koulibaly.
Everton vs. Chelsea final score
CHE — JORGINHO (pen) — 45th min+9
Another close-season signing thought he had a goal on his competitive bow for the Blues but Raheem Sterling was offside when Pickford spilt N’Golo Kante’s 43rd-minute shot.
It was left to a more familiar source of Chelsea goals to find the breakthrough. Despite some high-profile misses, Jorginho has now scored 18 Premier League penalties. That’s out of an overall tally of 20, giving him the highest proportion of penalty goals (90%) of any player with more than 10 goals in the competition’s history.
Just one goal would have done nicely for Everton and they did not come closer than when Edouard Mendy was at full stretch to tip a header from impressive debutant James Tarkowski over his crossbar in the 24th minute.
Mendy also responded sharply when a corner dropped to Doucoure after half-time, meaning the midfielder was unable to atone for his error when Chilwell darted past him to collect a cute Koulibaly pass.
The lack of goalmouth action was perhaps inevitable for two teams lacking attacking and creative focal points, while the sight of Yerry Mina limping off midway through the second half also leaves Lampard with concerns at the other end of the field for what promises to be a tough season ahead.

Thiago Silva’s golden sunset continues
Lampard brought the already veteran Silva to Chelsea on a one-year contract in 2020. Now into his third season with the Stamford Bridge outfit, the 37-year-old Brazilian remains at his imperious best. A man of Silva’s advancing years playing in a high line against a team operating almost exclusively on the counter-attack with pacy forwards should be a recipe for disaster, but Chelsea’s number six was immaculate throughout on Merseyside.
There were two standout moments, each to thwart the lively Gray — a first-half block to cut out a pass that looked set to put Gordon through on goal and the second a challenge to divert the winger’s shot behind. The latter passage of play came after Mendy elected not to come out for a ball over the top. Silva’s legs were no match for Gray’s but his brain can outdo any attacker you care to mention. He cajoled his opponent into a position where the angle for the shot was tight enough for him to make a decisive sprawling challenge.
It was a little masterpiece of defensive play and fell within a body of work where three interceptions and four clearances placed Silva out in front of all his team-mates over the course of the 90 minutes.
Tuchel’s Chelsea attack is still a muddle
When Chelsea rode the Tuchel wave all the way to Champions League glory in 2021, it felt like only the beginning. Romelu Lukaku arrived, ostensibly as the final piece in the puzzle before the start of last season. Obviously, things did not pan out and the misfiring Timo Werner is reportedly set to follow Lukaku through the Stamford Bridge exit door and the coach speaks of his team being in transition.
The front three that started at Goodison Park was not a surprise but their configuration was. Mason Mount always starts for Chelsea, Sterling was always going to start. Kai Havertz completed the front three, the player who operated through the middle as a false nine and scored the winner against Manchester City that night in Porto.
But Havertz lurked on the left of the attack and remained on the periphery of the contest. Sterling was his typical bundle of tireless menace, never giving the Everton defence a moment to rest. But he increasingly fed off scraps playing centrally. It is worth remembering that, in a 2021/22 season when Pep Guardiola did not have a sp psg kit ebay ecialist centre-forward, Ferran Torres, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer all had stints playing there when Sterling could have done.
The England forward’s best position is out wide and, on this evidence, Havertz’s isn't. Early season rustiness and a fine Everton defensive showing should not be discounted but an expert backline and Jorginho’s penalties are not a route to trophies on their own. Tuchel must find a way to unlock his team’s attacking potential that has laid dormant for too long.
Everton vs. Chelsea updates and highlights from Premier League clash
Fulltime: Tarkowski heads into Mendy's arms and that is that. Chelsea are good value for a win that won't live particularly long in the memory. Tuchel will not care, though. After a turbulent few months, he'll football player messi t shirt be happy to get off and running with a win. Lampard's injury problems were compounded by that awful setback for Godfrey, but Everton showed their manager plenty of encouraging sides. messi psg jersey for sale Ultimately, we got exactly what you might expect from two sides lacking cutting edge.
90th minute+10: Holgate hurls a long throw into the box, Gallagher clears. Everton now have a free-kick on halfway. This will be booted towards the mixer. It's now or never…
90th minute+8: A scrappy passage of play sees Pulisic win a free-kick on the left. You wouldn't expect to see this one pumped into the box. Gallagher comes on for Jorginho.
90th minute+7: Broja heads a free-kick into Pickford's arms. Will Chelsea regret not running that in the corner instead?
90th minute+3: Silva goes down after a challenge from Gordon and he's holding his hamstring. It looks like it's only cramp and he's carrying on. The veteran Brazilian has been immense and Chelsea need him to drag them over the line, you feel.
90th minute: Silva gets there first to defend a set-piece as 10 minutes of injury time are signalled. This second half has been dross, quite frankly, but there's a good chunk of time to make up for things.
88th minute: Everton will have some stoppage time to play with and Gordan is harrying and harassing Chelsea defenders into areas they don't really want to be in. It feels like the youngster will be pivotal in any final charge.
85th minute: Play has been stopped for a medical emergency in the crowd.
83rd minute: This has been a lovely cameo from Cucurella, who appears to have no concerns over his weighty price ag. The Spaniard arrows in a low cross and Sterling looks certain to score before a superb intervention from Mykolenko.
82nd minute: Cucurella dummies the free-kick for James. He might have been better off having a go because his new team-mate blazes over.
80th minute: That's brilliant from Sterling, who spins out of trouble near halfway and drives forward to play in Loftus-Cheek. Mykolenko sends him sprawling right on the edge of the Everton box and is booked.
76th minute: It looks like Sterling is staying central, with Broja to his left. Tuchel will have his reasons, but that feels odd. It's a long time since Chelsea offered any sort of a threat.
74th minute: Broja comes on for Havert psg jersey 2020 z at the same time as Cucurella replaces Koulibaly. Chelsea's front three has been a bit shapeless at times, to be honest, and Broja should provi messi psg jersey sales de a focal point.
72nd minute: All messi shirt psg i has a sniff of a chance but his touch lets him down and Azpilicueta intervenes. Koulibaly is down with what looks like cramp and that could herald Cucurella's Chelsea debut.
69th minute: Ruben Vinagre get his final instructions from Ashley Cole and comes on as Mina's replacement for his Everton debut. That means the hosts have used all available substitutions, because their three changes have been single ones in three separate windows. For clubs to benefit from the new five substitutions rule, they must come within three changes. Antonio Conte made a quadruple substitution for Tottenham earlier, the big show-off.
67th minute: Oh dear, is this another centre-back down for Everton? Mina is not in the dire straits that Godfrey was before but he's pulled up and is down on the touchline. The Colombia international was under a little bit of pressure from Sterling but it all looked quite innocuous.
65th minute: Tuchel turns to his bench for the first time and sends on Pulisic and Loftus-Cheek for Mount and Chilwell.
61st minute: McNeil, who has had more touches than any other Everton player on his debut, makes way. That means Gordon out to a more familiar wide role and Alli to centre-forward. Silva and Koulibaly have been excellent but they have a fresh problem.
59th minute: Dele Alli, who had a formidable record against Chelsea back in his Spurs days, is getting ready to come on.
54th minute: McNeil dispossesses Chilwell and sends Doucoure into the right channel. Silva reads the cutback – of course he does – and gets there to snuff out the danger with Gordon lurking.
52nd minute: Oooh, Doucoure almost atones for his earlier error as a corner falls to him and Mendy saves well. Good spell for Everton.
48th minute: Everton's threat is almost exclusively on the counter-attack but it's a useful one. Silva is a little long in the tooth for chasing the likes of Gray and pleaded in vain for Mendy to come out from his goal and sweep up. The veteran centre-back managed to get back, block behind and scowl at his goalkeeper.
46th minute: We're back. No changes for either side.
45th minute+9: GOAL!!!!! Jorginho sends Pickford the wrong way this time!!!! And that's a halftime lead for Tuchel's side.
45th minute+8: Mina is making a nuisance of himself because that's his thing in these situations. He's booked. Jorginho vs. Pickford… the Englishman saved from the Italian during the Euro 2020 shootout,,,
45th minute+6: Kante is deep down the right wing, a good indication of how deep Everton are getting to see this out to half-time. Havertz glances his cross just away from Sterling but Chelsea keep the attack alive, Chilwell darts into the box and Doucoure brings him down. Penalty to Chelsea.
45th minute+3: Sterling has another shot blocked and then wins another corner. Rinse and repeat. This one is from the right-wing, though.
45th minute: There will be eight minutes of additional time after the long stoppage for Godfrey's injury.
44th minute: Some dazzling feet from Gordon and it's Koulibaly's turn to produce some high-class centre-back play with a fine tackle. Injury time coming up and there's going to be a lot of it.
43rd minute: GOOAAA… no! Relief for Pickford, who spills Kante's shot and Sterling converts the rebound. The England forward was offside.
41st minute: Quality defending at both ends from Mina and Silva. First the Everton centre-back slides in to block Mount's goalbound shot. Azpilicueta can't get to the loose ball and Everton are away on the break. Gray looks to slide in Gordon but Silva reads his pass superbly.
39th minute: Chelsea look the better side but are yet to create anything clear-cut as Pickford fists away a James cross. And the number of transitions happening as E psg shirt ebay verton's busy forwards jackhammer about the place is certainly to the home crowd's liking.
35th minute: It's been a bit of an eye-opening introduction to Premier League rough and tumble for Koulibaly, who is fortunate not to be booked for pulling Gordon's shirt and pushing him over.
33rd minute: Boos now for Sterling, who sends cutely sends Gray the wrong way. He releases Mount, whose cross is cleared behind by Mina. Of course Holgate clears the firs tone behind for another. And another! Chelsea's 10th.
31st minute: Sterling on the charge and gets the free-kick this time after Iwobi blunders into the back of him. James gets another look at the Everton box but the hosts cl psg shirts near me ear.
28th minute: Looking cross from Mykolenko and, in fairness to the makeshift striker, that's a tricky one for Gordon to direct and it skips past Mendy's right-hand post.
26th minute: Lovely skill from Sterling, who turns on Mounts shorts corner and dribbles past a helpless Patterson. His dinked cross is headed behind by Holgate at the near post, because that appears to be exclusively Holgate's job since coming on.
24th minute: McNeil wins Everton's first corner. I sails over the Chelsea box but Mykolenko sends in a lovely delivery from the left. Tarkwoski rises to meet it and Mendy makes a sharp save, pushing over his crossbar.
22nd minute: There's a new directive for referees to allow more contact in challenges this season and that might have helped Everton out there, after Doucoure grabs at Sterling in the penalty area, Mina shoves him in the back and a melee ensues. Despite his protests to the referee, Sterling is waved away.
21st minute: Teasing ball from Gray but Gordon shows himself not to be specialist as he ducks under the attempted header. Koulibaly clears.
19th minute: Holgate right into the action. The restart commences a flurry of Chelsea corners, the third of which is worked short to Mount. Pickford gets down to save his drive and Holgate slides in to make a vital challenge on Sterling. The substitute then heads the next one behind before Patterson clears to end the spell of pressure.
15th minute: Godfrey is still on the pitch receiving treatment and this looks like a really bad one for the centre-back. A raucous early atmosphere has understandably being punctured.
10th minute: One of those variety show Jordan Pickford moments, but this isn't really his fault. Godfrey plays a rank backpass and the England goalkeeper strains to stop it from going out for a corner. He manages that (according to the linesman, anyway, because that looked like a corner to me) but diverts the ball to Havertz's feet. The Chelsea forward has a tight angle to work with and Godfrey gets back to make a last-ditch challenge, before landing in a heap with Pickford and Havertz. Unfortunately, Godfrey looks to have injured himself in the melee and Mason Holgate is getting ready to come on.
7th minute: It reaches Havertz but Pickford gathers with the minimum of fuss.
6th minute: Tarkowski was involved in a probing spell of possession just then but he clumsily fouls Sterling and James will like the angle on this free-kick.
2nd minute: McNeil, operating from the right, swings his first teasing ball into the box, Doucoure gets forward to join the attack — as he will need to with Everton light up front — and he heads wide under pressure. It was barely half a chance but nicely worked by the hosts.
5 mins to KO: The teams are in that famously tight tunnel and Goodison Park is bouncing. Z-Cars and here we go.
25 mins to KO: Timo Werner is reportedly on his way out of Chelsea, meaning we could be seeing plenty more of Armando Broja. The Albania international is on the Blues' bench after a productive season on loan at Southampton and Romelu Lukaku's return to Inter could mean a few opportunities ahead.
40 mins to KO: On paper, this looks like a tall order for Everton and they'll need Goodison Park rocking like it was during the final weeks of their survival bid. Without a replacement for Richarlison and with Rondon and Calvert-Lewin sidelined through suspension and injury respectively, Anthony Gordon will do his best impression of a centre-forward. Maybe McNeil's set-piece delivery will be their best route to a goal.
1 hour to KO: Here are your lineups. Koulibaly, Sterling, Tarkowski and McNeil all make full debuts for their respective clubs. Cucurella is on the Chelsea bench, while Everton wingback Nathan Patterson makes his first Premier League appearance having signed from Rangers in January.
1 hour 20 mins to KO: Everton also experienced a pre-season walloping in the United States but, while Chelsea were beaten 4-0 by Arsenal, the Toffees lost by the same scoreline to Minnesota United. An ungenerous appraisal could say it's handy that James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil are already used to relegation battles, but the two former Burnley favourites look like shrewd additions. Whether Everton's transfer market activity is enough to offset the loss of Richarlison to Tottenham is another matter and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's injury woes have reappeared at an unfortunate time.
1 hour 40 mins to KO: It really feels like anyone's guess over what sort of Chelsea we might see this afternoon. For a team with ambitions of competing on all fronts, that in itself isn't ideal. Tuchel himself said this week that he didn't feel Chelsea were ready for the new season after some poor friendly outings. However, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella all feel like stellar signings, even if they haven't come cheap as new owner Todd Boehly has proved to be something of a rogue element messi psg jersey kids 9-10 in the transfer market so far.
2 Hrs to KO: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Everton's Premier League opener at home to Chelsea. Frank Lampard facing his former club, where there's been plenty of pre-season turbulence, means this one feels like it might just be the pick of the opening weekend.

That means an opportunity for Nathan Patterson at right wing-back, while Anthony Gordon has been asked to do a job at centre-forward. Debutant Tarkowski will be joined by Yerry Mina at the back after the Colombia international passed a late fitness test.
